Basic Coastal Cruising launches the student into more advanced topics such as reading charts and seamanship. Also in-depth sail trim and boat handling techniques. You will be introduced to new vessel types and prepared for extended sailing in heavy weather and unfamiliar waters.
About ASA 103:
This intermediate course is perfect for the sailor wanting hands on experience in handling bigger cruising boats with wheel steering and inboard diesel engines. Learn the fundamentals of daytime Coastal Cruising in moderate wind and sea conditions.
Topics Covered:
- Federal Safety Equipment, additional recommended safety equipment
- How to obtain weather forecasts and interpretation of the effect on your sailing plans
- Proper and effective use of the VHF radio
- Learn proper sail combinations for various wind conditions
- Learn how to dock and undock larger cruising boats
- Learn how to pick up a mooring the first time
- Skipper and crew duties
- Chart reading and interpretation
- Different crew overboard procedures
- Continued improvement in sailing skills
- Practice boat handling under power and more.
What to expect:
This is a hands on course with most of our time spent on the water learning and practicing skills. Class size is limited to 4 students. Tuition includes course materials, an ASA certified instructor, and ASA certification on successful completion of the course standards.
